The world of work is unforgiving and very demanding. In listening to the needs of the business community, it appears that we as educators need to re-evaluate how we are preparing students to be valuable and successful employees.
We also need to realize that the education system is only one part of the answer. Parents and the business community play important roles in helping to lay a foundation for students to take advantage of all the opportunities that are available.
As educators, we must keep in mind we are not separate and apart from adult life, but that we are one of the building blocks. The private sector needs to also re-evaluate its role. It seems that to make money today is to say “the Customer is Always Right.” Well, a problem may be that NOW customers believe it!
Customers are trained by the large corporate business community to yell loudly, stomp their feet, write to corporate headquarters and their everyneed will be met. Students and parents are customers. We in the educational community have responded by adopting the private sector philosophy of serving our customer. It seems we are driven by concerns over a student’s happiness, or boredom or whether we are meeting their individual needs and helping them to become unique individuals.
Great Quotes . . .
"Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder."
George Washington
The dilemma or problem is that as parents and educators, we send our students into a world of work that does not value these qualities. When students enter the workforce, they are no longer a customer. They become a worker, who is valued when they add value to their company by coming to work every day, on time, working extremely hard, without complaint, as a positive team member. All adults know that life itself is the most demanding teacher.
We as educators, parents and the business community need to re-evaluate how we are laying a foundation for students to take full advantage of their infinite potential. We need to look at balancing the nurturing of students, while they are in school, with preparation and a realization of what will be required, just to get, and keep, a toe-hold in the working world.
